Description

Primary duties include implementing nursing protocols as prescribed; providing day-to-day direct services to consumers, assisting with writing culturally competent assessments and nursing assessments for initial intakes and daily progress notes. The RN functions under the direct supervision of the Assistant Program Manager and is a fully integrated member of the CSP clinical team. The RN takes responsibility for arranging and providing nursing functions as prescribed by the psychiatrists and other community doctors. He or she also acts as a team member especially related to consumers with a complicated medical diagnosis, and backs up individual team members or the whole team, when assigned.

Essential Qualifications

  • RN with current State of Wisconsin license
  • Experience working with people with serious mental illness
  • Sound clinical skills
  • Commitment to work toward improving cultural competence as demonstrated by: valuing difference/diversity; recognizing personal limitations in one's competencies and expertise, and having the desire to improve in these areas
  • Ability to assess progress and encourage positive change, taking into account cultural and clinical considerations, and consumers' own wishes and definitions of success
  • Strong commitment to facilitating consumer participation in their own treatment/service planning and provision
  • Knowledge of psychotropic medications and nursing protocols relevant to community psychiatric nursing
  • Good documentation And communication skills
  • Valid Drivers License and access to car and willingness to use it for work (transporting program participants)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Nursing
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in applying clinical knowledge in a culturally sensitive manner so as to have a positive influence in cross cultural mental health and AODA service delivery.

Responsibilities

Clinical
(High Responsibility - 80% of effort)
1. Work as a designated team member on an assigned basis and work individually with consumers as directed by the Assistant Program Manager or qualified designee. Ensure that services are culturally competent/sensitive, that they promote the principles of normalization and consumer participation, and that they comply with HSS 63.
2. Assist in developing in-depth assessments; comprehensive treatment plans; updates, and revisions as required by code and as needed for consumers on the team, taking into account cultural and personal attributes and characteristics.
3. Maintain contact with consumers to a degree sufficient to monitor and assist progress and in compliance with treatment plan methodology.
4. Administer medications and monitor for effects and side effects. Report observations to the psychiatrist.
5. Nursing diagnosis and evaluation of consumer medical and mental status, progress, and problems, and share opinions with the team.
6. With other team members, assist consumers in gaining access to the health care system, and act as liaison between physician and consumer to promote understanding of health care problems, needs, and procedures.
7. Fully assess each new consumer's health needs.
8. With attention to required time lines, maintain records of contacts and services, clinical charts, and correspondence, complete all paperwork and records required by administrative code, good medical practice, and county contract. Assist in modifying record keeping and paperwork so it allows for/encourages inclusion of data about one's cultural and spiritual aspects.
9. Assist in developing and implementing treatment plans.
10. Attend program unit meetings, team meetings, treatment planning, and morning report as schedule allows.
11. Assist with ordering medications and medical supplies, packaging, record-keeping, and dispensing. Arrange for finances as it pertains to medications.
Programmatic
(Medium Responsibility - 20% of effort)

1. Advise other staff re: medical procedures necessary to promote optimal health for consumers.
2. Serve as an advocate and educator to both consumers and the general community regarding issues of mental illness, the role of stigma, and consumer and citizen rights, issues of cultural competence.
3. Provide consultation and education services and support to agencies and services involved with the consumer, to facilitate continuity and consistency and to potentate consumer's adjustment and success. Model cross-cultural CSP skills to outside professionals PRN.
4 . Serve as unit representative to Center staff committees as requested.
5. Implement and supervise projects or groups as assigned.
6. Supervise professional trainees as assigned.
7. Attend inservice training and conferences as authorized and directed.
