Community Support Programs
The Mental Health Center operates five state certified Community Support Program teams located at four separate sites. Each team has its own emphasis and program adaptations based on the special needs and preferences of its consumers. For example, Community Treatment Alternatives diverts people from the Dane County Jail and serves conditionally released clients; Gateway specializes in serving deaf clients.

All of the CSPs are comprehensive support programs serving Dane County residents who have serious and persistent mental illnesses. They are categorized as “core programs” and they are responsible for providing intensive, system-wide case management. Each program offers a full range of treatment, rehabilitation, and support services designed to help people live in the community with quality as they define it, and minimizing the amount of time spent in restrictive environments such as hospitals, nursing homes, or jails.

Hours: Each CSP has its own set hours, however the sites are typically open 8/8:30 a.m. to 4/4:30 p.m. for services/appointments. Phone may be answered somewhat earlier and/or later in the day. Staff in the CSPs are also working some evening and weekend hours for medication support, outreach, etc., and may not accessible by phone.

CSP GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

To increase opportunities for community integration by providing treatment, rehabilitation, support, education, and advocacy in the community settings which reflect consumer choice vis-a-vis their interests, values, and traditions.

To prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications to insure that they are effective medications at the lowest possible dosages needed to stabilize illness with minimal side effects.

To reduce the frequency of hospitalization/incarceration resulting from acute and chronic psychotic episodes by assertively providing community support services, thereby reducing regressive disruptions to people’s lives.

To reduce the length and cost of inpatient stays by providing alternatives to traditional inpatient services.

To reduce the number of people who decline treatment by providing assertive outreach, along with case management which the consumer helps to direct.

To provide consultation, education and support to the agencies and services incorporated into service plans in order to provide effective system-wide case management and consumer satisfaction and comfort in the community.
